So… What Is Focusing?

Focusing is a simple, learnable practice for listening to your inner experience in a deeper way. It was developed by philosopher and psychologist Eugene Gendlin, who noticed something intriguing: people who made meaningful progress in therapy weren’t necessarily the most articulate or insightful. They were the ones who paused, checked inward, and stayed with a subtle, unclear bodily sense of their situation.

Gendlin called this the felt sense. It’s not a thought. It’s not quite an emotion either. It’s a whole-body knowing about something that matters to you.

Focusing is the process of:

  • Turning your attention inward
  • Noticing that felt sense about a specific issue or question
  • Staying with it kindly, without trying to fix or explain it
  • Allowing new clarity, shifts, or insights to emerge naturally

No visualization required. No positive thinking. No forcing breakthroughs.

Just listening.

Why Does This Matter?

Because so much of our wisdom lives below the level of words.

We often think clarity comes from thinking harder. But many of life’s most important questions don’t respond well to force. Should I stay or go? Why does this keep bothering me? What’s really underneath my reaction?

Focusing helps you access information that thinking alone can’t reach.

Focusing offers a grounded, humane counterbalance. It respects complexity. It trusts the body. It moves at the speed of real change.

And perhaps most importantly, it reminds us that we are not broken, blocked, or missing something essential. We are often just unheard.
